La Pietà, St. Peters

While strolling around St. Peters, looking at the statues of miserable old men, you have to go and visit one of the best pieces of sculpture ever created. La Pietà was carved by non other than Michelangelo Buonarroti, who knew a thing or too about carving rock.

La Pietà

I really enjoyed seeing this piece. Michelangelo carved this when he was 24 years old, and is the only piece he ever signed. Talented bloke.

On that trip, I was with my eldest daughter, Alexandra, when we were in the Sistine Chapel. I point out to her the beautiful picture of God and Adam. She looks up and says “what picture?”. I looked at her and asked her where her glasses were. “Oh, I left them at home”. So I took her to Italy, to the Sistine Chapel, but she hasn’t actually seen Michelanglo’s ceiling. Oh Well.

More to come…….
