St. Petersburg, Russia

..I was fortunate to be able to spend a few days in St. Petersburg recently. This is a really nice city, sitting on the edge of the Baltic sea. It is a lot more like the classical European cities like Vienna, although there is a feeling that it tries a little too hard to emulate it’s western sisters. Despite that, there are some truly beautiful places in St. Petersburg. I’d done some research and new I wanted to shoot the Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood and not just because of the cool name. I wanted to see it from the Italian Bridge, and managed to incorporate both in this shot.

This is just one of many great viewpoints in St. Petersburg, interesting and historically important, but above all photogenic. This is one city where there isn’t a single icon that captures the spirit of the city, there are many. On the way back from shooting the church, I walked past the Kazan Cathedral. It looked amazing, so I threw down the tripod and set up and got this:

I wasn’t planning on shooting the Kazan, but hey, it was there. A disclaimer is due though. I did remove some unsightly cables that were suspended across the frame. I personally don’t have an issue using Photoshop to remove ugly, and it’s my picture anyway. If you go to St. Petersburg, and stand where I was standing, you can’t help but wince at the electric cables spoiling the view. You end up wishing you could take them down. That’s what Photoshop is for!

More to come…..
